The wheels are in motion on a new project which will give young people in Renfrewshire a fun place to hang out. The Youth Bus, launched at the start of August, is a converted single decker bus which has been given a makeover and kitted out with a range of games consoles, DVDs and music players. It will act as a mobile youth facility aimed at diverting youngsters away from anti-social behaviour. The bus will visit different locations across Renfrewshire.

It was launched outside Braehead Shopping Centre by Councillor Brian Lawson, Renfrewshire Council’s Community Safety Spokesman. The Councillor was joined by Jamie Reid, 15, and Megan Hanney, 9, whose ideas have been used to redesign the look of the former Arriva bus.

Councillor Lawson said: “The Youth Bus will be a great facility for the young people of
Renfrewshire. It has been created with a great deal of input from young people themselves and will give them somewhere safe and fun to spend time with other young people as well as a place to access information and advice on issues affecting them. It is also a great example of how the council, police and fire services are working in partnership with private companies, such as Arriva, to improve the opportunities for young people in Renfrewshire.”

The idea of the youth bus was developed by Strathclyde Police and Renfrewshire Council’s
anti-social investigations team. They teamed up with Renfrewshire Youth Voice and Arriva, who have donated the bus, and will be responsible for its maintenance and events diary.

The bus is being funded by Strathclyde Police,
Renfrewshire Community Planning Partnership’s Fairer Scotland Fund, Braehead Shopping Centre, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and BAA.

Equipment for the bus has been donated by Game, A&E Electricals, Property Services and Martin Plant Hire.
