Paisley Threads marks ten successful years
Mon, 27 Oct 2008

Paisley Threads has marked ten successful years of supporting young people and young parents to achieve independence by staging a celebration event at Paisley Town Hall.
The service offers one-to-one information and advice, group work and drop-in for young pregnant women and young parents who have a baby or Toddler. It is also used by vulnerable parents and/or tenants aged 16-21 living in the Renfrewshire area.
The Paisley Threads project, which has worked with over 1500 young people since it started in 1998, supports young pregnant women and young parents with parenting through various group work sessions such as pre-natal, baby, social and health groups where young people learn skills and receive advice on how best to care for their baby and themselves.
The service also helps young parents and/or tenants by helping them with their tenancy, benefits advice, education, training and employment giving a rounded service of support to these vulnerable young people.
The event provided information stations on each of the services provided followed by guest speakers who included Renfrewshire Council Depute Leader Eileen McCartin, Susan Bell, Integrated Children’s Services Manager at Renfrewshire Council, Helen Moir from Jogging Buddies and Sally Ann Kelly, Head of Children’s Services Operations at Barnardos Scotland.
Sally Anne explained “We aim to assist young people to take control of their lives by working along side them and providing support. One of the key strengths of the service is involving the people who use it to continually develop it to help educate young parents about childcare, develop parenting and practical domestic skills as well as providing tenancy support”.
Eileen McCartin said “this is an excellent project providing support and advice to youngsters and helping them towards a better standard of living”.
Paisley Threads is supported by a number of funds including the Fairer Scotland Fund, Supporting People and Barnardos Voluntary Fund and is one of sixty Barnardos projects which works directly with over 10 000 children, young people and their families across the country.
