Ferguslie Sports Centre gets a SHOKKThu, 19 Jun 2008
Young people from across Renfrewshire are being invited to get up and get active this summer with the opening of the first dedicated, fully inclusive youth fitness facility in Ferguslie Sports Centre. The gym was officially opened by Councillor Derek Mackay on Thursday 19th June 2008. The gym will aim to impact on Renfrewshire’s Physical Activity and Sports Strategy which makes up part of the Scottish Governments“More Active Lifestyles” Strategy. The unique youth gym and fitness facility which was funded by the Anti-Social Awards Fund is designed exclusively for under eighteens and gives all young people the opportunity to get physically active in a safe and enjoyable environment. SHOKK® ‘The Youth Fitness Specialists’ are the company that have supplied the concept. Rather than simply scaling down adult gym kit, which would be dangerous for the growing bodies of young people, SHOKK® equipment was specially developed by the company’s sport science team in close collaboration with leading UK research institutions. Darryl Ramage, who runs the facility, aims to provide a total youth fitness solution that encourages more young people to get fit and stay fit in Renfrewshire. “We have always recognised the importance of delivering physical activity to the wider youth community and the SHOKK® Youth gym is a clear example of this. It is a unique and exciting development that will provide local youngsters with an affordable fitness experience that supports our existing sports programmes. The functionality of SHOKK®’s equipment and their sports science programming also means that it can impact the performance of youngsters at all ability levels.” Jonathan Williams, managing director of SHOKK® said: “The idea behind the SHOKK® concept was to create a fitness solution for young people that is fun, safe and non-competitive. Walking into the new Energy Zone youth gym will be a unique experience. The gym’s interior is designed to appeal to young people, with bold colours, chrome equipment, night club lighting and a funky sound system. Essentially, it’s a space designed with young people in mind – somewhere they can identify with and a place they’ll want to hang out.” For more information on the new facility contact Ferguslie Sports Centre on Fergusliesportscentre@hotmail.co.uk or visit www.SHOKK.co.uk |
