Lottery reaches out to the older generation!Tue, 10 Jun 2008
A local residents group in Renfrewshire have been awarded a fantastic £1953 by the “Awards for All” fund, supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sportscotland. The Mountain Ash Resident group are 1 of 136 Scottish arts, sports, community and heritage groups sharing in Lottery funding worth £883,236. The group of 15, from Rowan Court in Paisley organise all sorts of activities such as bingo nights, supper clubs, outings and many more in order to encourage community participation and improve the quality of life of all residents. The group have used the awarded funds to provide social and recreational opportunities for elderly residents in the local area including weekly tai chi classes , a trip for its members to Helenbourgh, plasma television, DVD player any many more. Jenny Rowland, secretary for the group said: “The money has been a great help to 90 households in the block and we have used it to increase the activities we think would be beneficial to all” Fellow group member Chrissie Fyvie added: “We are more than just neighbours now - we are good friends” The grant will help overcome feelings of isolation often experienced by older people providing activities they can enjoy with their peer. |
