Work has begun on a new £400,000 skatepark facility in Renfrew. The design of the skatepark, in the town's Robertson Park, is now complete and construction began on Wednesday 7 October.

Funding for the new facility has been secured by Renfrew and Gallowhill Local Area Committee, the Fairer Scotland Fund and Renfrew Common Good Fund. Renfrewshire Council and local skate group '30 Acres' have worked with Gravity Engineering on plans for the 1400 square metre skatepark and consultation was carried out with the local community.

As well as skateboards, it will be suitable for BMX bikes and rollerblades and will include features for beginners right through to expert riders.

Councillor Bill Perrie, convener of Renfrew and Gallowhill local area committee, said: "This is a great facility for Renfrew and an example of how the local area committee can support local people and groups to benefit the community. Consultation meetings were held which were very positive. This will provide young people in Renfrew with a first class facility in their local park and I'm looking forward to seeing it all completed."

Work is due to be completed in early Spring 2010. Robertson Park will remain open to the public throughout the project. Every effort will be taken to minimise the disruption to park users and surrounding residents during this time.

Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of the council's environment and infrastructure policy board, said: "The new skatepark is just one of the improvements being carried out in parks across Renfrewshire. Robertson Park is also going to have a new play area and nearby parks in Urquhart Crescent, Renfrew, and Montgomery Road in Gallowhill, will also benefit from £30,000 of improvements.

"We are committed to rejuvenating our local parks and providing a range of facilities for people of all ages."
