Unique games for the Youth Bus

Thu, 15 Jul 2010

It was game on for a group of students and school pupils from around Renfrewshire recently when Renfrewshire's Investing in the Future - Diversionary Project team launched a computer games competition.

Open to students studying Computer Games at Reid Kerr College in Paisley, the groups were tasked with designing and producing their own unique game, which would be tested and judged by the schools. Pupils from Linwood and Castlehead High School as well as pupils from Glencoats Primary were invited along to the College and took part in judging the competition. Street Skating ‘2010' was voted the best game with ‘Galactic Football' taking a close second place, providing the pupils with fun and games on the day.

The winning team was made up of Darren Rankin, 18 from Paisley, Scott Clough, 19 from East Kilbride and John McEwan, 17 from Paisley and the 3 delighted students had their game selected to appear in the Renfrewshire Youth Bus, which goes out to communities all over Renfrewshire in the evenings. Braehead Shopping Centre and the computer games shop ‘Game' at Braehead both donated prizes for the competition. All of the students picked up a prize on the day.

The Renfrewshire Youth Bus is part of Renfrewshire Council's award-winning Investing In Futures project which was set up to offer young people activities in their communities to try to reduce antisocial behaviour in Renfrewshire including, skateboarding (mobile skatepark), dance, street football, street and dj sessions.

The project is run as part of the Safer and Stronger Renfrewshire Partnership which sees Renfrewshire Council, PPRC, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and other partner organisations, working together to make Renfrewshire a safer place to live, work and visit.

Councillor Brian Lawson, Renfrewshire Council's Community Safety spokesperson, said: "Since Investing In Futures began almost two years ago the project has gone from strength to strength with popular additions such as the street football and the mobile youth gym. The new computer games for the youth bus are another great addition and also a fantastic example of young people having an input into the project themselves. They got to see first hand how hard the students had worked on their designs and the students will get to see their project in practice."

Martin Barrett, Senior Lecturer in Computing at Reid Kerr added, "Creating a computer game for the Renfrewshire Youth Bus was a unique opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and they came up with some great new ideas demonstrated on the day. I am sure these games will be well played around Renfrewshire this summer."
