The Community Action Fund

What is the Community Action Fund?
Community groups can have a really positive impact in our areas, and can often help bring about changes and improvements that benefit our neighbourhoods.

The Community Action Fund (CAF) supports community groups in Renfrewshire's regeneration areas looking to set up new projects or improve existing projects that will make a difference in their communities. Below you’ll find a brief outline of these themes, which are in line with Renfrewshire’s Community Plan, and a few ideas of the types of projects that would fit into these categories.

What can the Community Action Fund be used for?
The fund awards grants up to a maximum of £8,000 that can be used to help a wide range of projects, as long as they meet one of five themes: Improving Health; Engaging Young People; Getting People Back Into Work; Building Strong, Safe and Attractive Communities and Raising Educational Attainment.

Improving Health
Improving the health of residents across Renfrewshire’s most deprived areas is a key priority and we will support a range of projects that will work towards this aim. Amongst other things the aim is to reduce the number of people who die from coronary heart disease and cancers, reduce the number of people who smoke, particularly women during pregnancy, increase the number of women breastfeeding and increase the amount of fruit and vegetables eaten by residents.

Engaging young people
Projects that fit with this national priority should aim to get young people involved in their communities in various ways including participating in sport, the arts and physical activities.

Raising educational attainment
Projects under this category should aim to improve children and young peoples’ attainment whilst at school and help to reduce the number of unauthorised absences. The types of projects we will support will complement larger programmes and initiatives such as the Out of School Learning Team and the healthy eating or homework support initiatives in schools.

Building strong, safe and attractive communities
Improving the look of areas and making areas safer for people can have really positive impacts on residents and we would actively encourage groups to develop ideas or initiatives that fit this priority.

Getting people back to work
This priority is about making a difference to the levels of unemployment in the disadvantaged areas, reducing the number of families receiving key state benefits and improving the skills of adults of working age. The projects that will be supported through the CAF will complement larger scale projects such as Buddies for Learning, the Employment Action Team and training courses that are currently available through the local further education colleges.
